The collection's evolution captured the diverse and dynamic expressions of artists across India. As we look back and continue to enjoy the works of those who are now recognized as India's Modern Masters, we are proud to have supported their creative vision. We at Citi are committed to celebrating the inspired hues and notes of India's rich culture and aesthetic legacy.
J SWAMINATHAN (1928-1994)
Jagdish Swaminathan was a painter, poet and writer. Swaminathan tried to study art at night while writing in the day but eventually left his job to study at Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, Poland. He held his first exhibition in India in 1960. He was an ardent supporter of tribal art, which also significantly influenced his work. Swaminathan's earlier work was simple yet captivating; this evolved into more colour geometry, and eventually he extensively used symbols, often applying paint directly with his fingers. One of the most influential Indian artists, he played a lead role in establishing the famous Bharat Bhawan, a multi art complex.
